“About Me” – New Student Associate
Hi everyone!
I am excited to be taking part in Esri Canada’s student associate program! To begin, here is a little about me:
I am currently in my 4th year at the University of Toronto pursuing a double Major in Human Geography with a focus in Planning, Environmental Geography, and a GIS Minor. I’m passionate about using GIS within both of my majors to analyze spatial variations, with my broad interest lying in learning how the built environment impacts our everyday lives and how we can change the urban setting to improve both the environment’s and the population’s well-being.
In past projects I have used ArcGIS for data preparation, analysis, and presentation. One project involved performing a neighborhood analysis on accessible public spaces for Toronto’s youth. We gathered data for youth recreation centers and city parks and performed a network analysis using the city’s pedestrianized streets. Additionally, as part of my research assistant role, I am currently using the program to conduct preliminary demographic analyses and visualizations for an audit study examining housing discrimination in Toronto.
While my experience with the ArcGIS programs has largely been producing static maps with little user interaction, I am currently exploring new features within ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online programs to create interactive/dynamic maps as part of a Geovisualizations course. In my next blog post, I will delve into my projects from this course.
In my spare time, I like to step away from the computer and spend time outdoors, whether that be going on urban hikes with my dog in Toronto’s ravines or exploring neighborhoods around the city (weather permitting)!
Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing my fellow associate’s work and experiences with GIS!
