Hello! My name is Keya Patel, and I’m a fourth year student at the University of Toronto Mississauga majoring in Geospatial Data Science (GIS) and Geography. I’ve always been fascinated by the way places shape people’s lives, but it wasn’t until I took my first GIS course that I realized how powerful geospatial tools are in helping us understand complicated issues. What drew me into GIS is how it combines analytical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. A map isn’t just a visual it’s a story. Whether it’s showing gaps in mental health services, analyzing spatiotemporal patterns, or revealing patterns we might not otherwise see, GIS has the ability to make information meaningful and actionable. I love that it brings together data, design, and real world impact.

I’ve gotten to explore GIS through a wide range of real, applied work remote sensing, spatial statistics, modelling, public health, and urban planning. I’ve built interactive dashboards, automated spatial workflows with Python, and worked with everything from satellite imagery to dissemination-area data. Some of my recent projects include creating a Community Health Profile Dashboard for a Canadian town, designing a pharmacy site selection web app using census and ON-Marg indicators, and running spatial regression and hot spot analyses on topics like transit density and bike thefts. What I enjoy most is seeing how spatial data can support more equitable and informed decision making when it’s presented clearly.

I’m also interested in how different datasets GPS points, satellite imagery, radar, census information can be layered together to reveal environmental and social patterns that aren’t always visible at first. Field mapping, thermal analysis, and spatial modelling have shown me how powerful geospatial tools are for understanding communities and improving the way decisions are made.

Being part of the ECCE program is an opportunity I’m really excited about. It’s a chance to learn from others in the geospatial community, share my work, and take on new challenges. I’m looking forward to contributing to the ECCE blog, participating in the App Challenge, and continuing to grow as a GIS analyst committed to using spatial data for meaningful, community focused impact.
