Hi everyone! My name is Emmett Young and I am currently a third-year student studying at the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree with a major in human geography (with a focus in planning), with minors in GIS and applied data science.

Despite currently studying geography, GIS, and data science, I actually started my university career studying Performance Acting at Toronto Metropolitan University. As my first year was during the pandemic, I decided to take a year after the first year to re-evaluate my future plans and what I wanted to do as a future career. While working during my gap year, I discovered the Human Geography and GIS programs at UofT and was immediately intrigued. This intrigue was cemented and reinforced in my first year as I explored different courses in both Geography and GIS (and a little bit of Spanish too!)

So far in third year, I have continued to deepen my understanding of GIS, geography and data science. With my current course load, I have been learning about advanced ArcGIS Pro analysis techniques and features, how to incorporate python in GIS, and critiques of cartography through a lens of social justice. My current interests revolve around cluster and hotspot analysis, suitability analysis, and how to create more equitable urban environments and transportation schemes. Outside of school, I am also working with colleagues on an analysis of crime and violence surrounding Toronto restaurants and bars.

Going forward, I hope to continue my journey as a life-long learner and further deepen my understanding of GIS, cartography, and spatial data analysis. I also enjoy personal fitness, trying (and failing) to find time for practicing guitar, and watching Toronto sports games with my family. If you wish to reach out or connect with me, feel free to shoot me a message on my LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/emmettyoung2003. I look forward to meeting more people in the ECCE Community, so give me a shout whenever!
