The Department of Geography’s research and teaching programs cover a broad range of issues spanning both physical and social sciences providing a unique opportunity for students to gain exposure to many environmental and situational problems. Many of these research and teaching programs incorporate GIScience and remote sensing. Furthermore, through the GIS and Remote Sensing Option, undergraduate students can follow either a B.A or B.Sc. Minor in GIS and Remote Sensing for a well-rounded background that makes them competitive for professional careers and graduate study.
The Geographic Information Centre is the hub of GIScience and remote sensing in the Department of Geography at McGill University, actively supporting teaching and research activities. The Centre’s main strengths are in geospatial database development, GIS analyses, visualization and remote sensing. Currently the GIC also provides short courses in GIS and remote sensing and hands on research experience for talented and motivated undergraduate students.
The GIC will strengthen its core training and research support as an ESRI Canada Centre of Excellence. Undergraduate students benefit by participating in different projects every year and now will be able to take advantage of the multiple opportunities provided by this new collaboration with ESRI Canada. The GIC continues expanding its research support to Faculty and graduate students for projects in various regions in Africa, Asia and North, Central and South America, all of which will also benefit also from this initiative.
